Ten Questions With Al Cabino
![]()
Al Cabino was the man behind the petition to bring Nike shoes that Marty Mcfly wore in Back To The Future II. He went as far as creating a petition and a short commercial. Well the good people at Nike must have heard the buzz cause recently there have been some leaked picture of prototypes. We had a chance to catch up with Al Cabino and find out what else he has cooking.
Who is Al Cabino?
I am Canadian.
Tell us about yourself.
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada. I love sneakers. I am a Capricorn.
What’s your first sneaker memory?
My childhood sneaker memories have a lot to do with rocking brand new kicks and doing Michael Jackson dance moves.
What is sneaker activism, and where do you see it fitting with older, more traditional forms of activism?
Sneaker activism is applying activism to sneaker culture. There’s old-style activism with people like Naomi Klein. This is new-style activism. Can sneaker activism work? I won’t know the answer until I go to Nike, to Beaverton.

Why did you choose the Marty McFly Nike from Back to the Future II for your sneaker campaign?
The McFlys are the Holy Grail of movie sneakers. The McFlys were created just for the film; they were never worn beyond the silver screen.
Before the petition, I heard you made a chocolate sneaker. How and why did this come to about?
It was a reference to the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. If you watch the film, you’ll see Gene Wilder throw a pair of Pumas into a vat of molten chocolate.
So what are your current projects, anything you’re working on right now?
Yes, I’m working on a book about sneaker culture. I’m in talks to make a Michael Moore-esque film, and I have some exciting top secret things in the works.
What can we expect from Al Cabino in the future?
A show on MTV.
