Mick Boogie Interview
Who is Mick Boogie?
Just a regular guy who loves music and is blessed to make a living off of it.
Let’s give our readers who may not be too familiar with Mick Boogie some background. Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and what are you presently involved in?
I’m from Ohio and have been djing for 10 years. College radio, commercial radio, clubs, mixtapes. I’ve done it all. Really focusing on traveling now and doing events around the globe. That’s the current modus operandi.
Can you speak about how you got here up to this point and what you really trying to do career-wise?
The love of music and a persistent work ethic have made me into who I am. I have a lot of exciting future options. Definitely will be putting out a major label album soon, the question is with whom. Like I said earlier, travelling definitely. Probably some a&r work too.
What drew you to the turntables, What got you interested in doing DJing?
Two things playing the drums and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Since the DJ Drama incident it seems that you have made the switch to offering free mixtapes, was this a conscious decision?
It’s about the music. A wise man once said the music is free, you pay for the talent.
What do you think the mixtape industry will become now?
Umm…drastically different (laugh).
Define your sound and why do you play the style that you do? How do you approach your DJ sets? What can people expect to see and hear when Mick Boogie is headlining?
Creative, intelligent selection. Lots of records. Some surprises. Not the same old, same old. I keep it fun. And the thinking-person/music aficionado will definitely appreciate the flow.
What DJ’s would you pay money to watch?
Jazzy Jeff. Kid Capri. DJ AM.
How did you get into radio and do you prefer satellite radio format?
College radio was a hobby that led into commercial mixshow, which is fun. Sirius is the best though. I can play whatever I want. Shout to the homie Ron at Sirius.
You are currently the DJ for the Cavs and do a lot of stuff for Lebron - How did these opportunities come up for you?
The NBA is hiphop. The Cavs are exciting. Lebron is an American icon. How could you not have a DJ in a situation like that? And in this market, it only made sense to involve me in that capacity. The Cavs recognized my accomplishments in the hiphop arena and felt like it would be a great fit. It’s been almost 3 years now. I love the Cavs organization. From the owner on down, its first class.
What artist should we be on the lookout for in 2007?
Al Fatz. Little Brother. Ray Cash.
